Our Reading Tree

We made a tree for our schoolroom. I'd like to eventually paint a tree but wanted to test it out without creating something permanent. The kids have really enjoyed writing down the books they've read on the leaves- each of them has a different color leaf, and read alouds are another color. It's a fun way of remembering what we've read and has brought back memories of favorite books we've shared, and it's created a feeling of accomplishment as each child finishes a book and then gets to record it. It's also fun sitting under the tree while reading.

  2. This is a great idea!! I like the 3-D effect better than painting it on the wall. What did you use for the trunk?

  4. Hi, Jennifer!

I used cardboard for the trunk, curved it and stapled it to the wall. Then I twisted sheets of bulletin board paper I got from a teacher's supply store and glued it to the trunk and stapled the limbs to the wall. It was a quick and dirty way of doing it, I'm sure there are nicer ways to go about it- I'm not very nice to my walls.

  8. Oh this is simply amazing! Thanks for sharing this! I have been thinking through ideas on how to encourage reading with my kids and wanted something visual to help give them that sense of accomplishment. I love the fun you've tied in here! I can see my kids really getting into this. What a creative idea! Thank you so much for sharing this!
